The Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ+ Youth is a place where Midwest LGBTQ+ youth can come together, celebrate who they are, and find the support they deserve. It’s a day to connect with friends, meet allies, and learn how to make a difference in their schools and communities. At a time when LGBTQ+ young people are facing more challenges than ever, this conference is a reminder that they’re not alone—they’re part of a strong, vibrant community that has their back.
Founded in 2005, the Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ Youth was created to provide a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ youth across Iowa and the Midwest. From the beginning, the conference has championed the idea that every young person—regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation—deserves a place to belong.
What started as a small gathering has grown into the largest LGBTQ+ youth conference in the country, welcoming tens of thousands of students, educators, and allies over the years. Through workshops, keynote speakers, and community-building sessions, the event has sparked vital conversations on inclusion, policy, and student leadership. Many who once attended as students have since returned as speakers, mentors, and exhibitors—continuing the cycle of advocacy and empowerment.
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we reflect on the bold actions of those who have contributed to the conference’s legacy. Educators, advocates, and students have all played essential roles in expanding inclusive spaces across Iowa and beyond, ensuring that LGBTQ youth find the acceptance and community they deserve. This milestone is a testament to the power of visibility, resilience, and collective advocacy—and a reminder that the work continues.
The conference’s name often prompts curiosity. A Governor’s Conference is a type of event designed to bring attention to a critical issue, similar to Governor’s Conferences on education, public health, and economic development.
The first Governor’s Conference on LGBTQ Youth was held in 2005 with the support of then-Governor Tom Vilsack, a leader who championed LGBTQ+ and student rights in Iowa. Each year, the sitting Governor—regardless of party affiliation—is invited to attend and hear directly from LGBTQ youth, a crucial group of constituents whose voices deserve to be heard. While early conferences saw engagement from Iowa’s leadership, participation from the Governor’s office has waned in recent years.
Over time, there have been attempts from detractors to change the name of the conference. However, the students—at the heart of this conference—remain steadfast in keeping it. Their stance is clear: it’s not about honoring any particular Governor, but rather issuing a standing invitation to Iowa’s leadership to recognize and support the LGBTQ youth who are shaping the future of our state.
This year’s theme reflects both the journey of the conference and the progress of LGBTQ+ youth over the last two decades. From the early 2000s to today, students have stood up, spoken out, and shaped change in their schools and communities.
This theme is a tribute to the resilience, advocacy, and joy of LGBTQ+ youth—past, present, and future. It celebrates how far we’ve come and reaffirms our commitment to not going back.

🗣 "Coming here assured me that there are other people like me and that you're not alone, I was struggling with self-image, and this really helped me find myself again. I'm more comfortable now because I know I don't have to be in fear."
🗣 “[The conference] teaches kids who feel like this and know who they are, but never really got the support to be who they are, it helps them grow up and know that this is okay and gives them the bravery to actually speak out about who they are and then help educate other students.”
🗣 "It's hard for us. Not only the trans community, but the entire Pride community, seeing all these people here— they all support us, so you're not alone. We just need to keep fighting, and eventually, I hope things will change and turn around."
This year, the 20th Annual Governor's Conference on LGBTQ Youth will take place on April 11th at The Meadows Event Center in Altoona, IA!
